3 Steps For A Winning Speech

Delivering a winning speech in front of a large audience can be daunting and scary for some people. But sometimes feeling uncomfortable, nervous with sweaty palms can be a good experience.  To deliver a winning speech you have to be master of your thoughts. Let me explain. When negative thoughts come in and they will, you have to overcome them and take charge. Easier said than done I know.


I had to experience this first hand to understand how this worked. From not being able to speak a single word in public to competing in the world championship of public speaking in Washington D.C.  I accomplish this in 16 months. Not saying this to brag but to help you understand there are steps you can take to deliver a winning speech and if carefully applied you too can have a winning speech.


Here are three things you need for a  winning speech.


  1. FOCUS – Let’s stop worrying about eye contact, hand gestures, stage movement, etc… Not saying they’re not important but let’s not focus too much time on these things. For example, When you play golf, you have to worry about your hand grip, your stance, your left arm, your backswing, etc. My strategy is JUST HIT THE BALL!!! Over thinking is overrated. Think long, Think Wrong.


Same goes for speaking.  JUST SPEAK!!! Focus on delivering YOUR message only.  One thing at a time. When all your energy get’s divided into three different areas, nothing matures and the process of improving slows down.  

  1. CONFIDENCE– Let me ask you a question.  On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best), How good are you delivering speeches? If you answered 9 or below you need a confidence boost. Your mind has to believe it first before you do. Doubt is public enemy #1. if doubt enters your mind and decides to stay longer than 15 minutes, you will be discouraged, and your performance will diminish. Here is where positive affirmations come into play. Here are a few statements that I want you to say to yourself every morning and add them to your morning ritual. It takes 21 days of consistency for a habit to be created good or bad. You need to think like a champion before becoming one.


Your Daily Affirmations:

I’m the champion-  I attract positive people

I’m strong- I attract abundance

I’m confident – I attract opportunities

I’m smart – I invite knowledge

I’m healthy- I draw wisdom

I’m the best – I bring beautiful experiences to myself


  1.  Action–   ” Action conquers fear every time”  Don’t wait for that perfect time, it will never arrive. What’s stopping you from achieving your goals? What are your thoughts telling you? Don’t let your mind control your destiny. As soon as you take action, DOUBT comes in and tries to derail your dreams. The first time I spoke, I repeated the same thing over and over again. I was like Um..Umm..Um. My negative thoughts were advising me to quit and go back to Toy’s R US where I used to work. Practice makes perfect. Stop thinking about it and just do it. Remember what I said earlier think long think wrong. Just start the process and take action. ACTION beats failure and procrastination every time, it’s their kryptonite you can’t lose.


Once you follow these steps all the other stuff like eye contact and gestures will gradually come into play no problem. We all have the potential for greatness, but it’s up to us to convince ourselves to make that happen. Want to deliver a winning speech? What’s stopping you?
